A Postcard from French Basque Country (Part 1)
A short guide of what to do, see and eat.
We’ve just returned from our summer escape to Basque Country and I can't help but feel a little wistful as I think back on our time there. We had a fabulous time exploring this western corner of southern France! Unlike the sun-soaked Provence area or the glamorous shores of the French Riviera, Basque Country has a quieter, more understated charm that captured our hearts…
As it straddles the Pyrenees mountains and stretches along the Atlantic Coast, Basque Country is a special region of France where you find both beaches and mountains, along with a perfect mix of big cities, quaint villages, a rich local culture, a stellar food scene – and the list goes on.
So, whether you’re looking for a family vacation by the beach, a cultural trip for seasoned travellers or a romantic escape in a quaint village, Basque Country has something for everyone. I know it sounds like an exaggeration, but honestly, this place is a little slice of heaven… and I can’t wait to go back.
Here is my short guide of what to do, see and eat in Basque Country. Marc (my husband) and I spent 3 days in the French part of the region, with a final day in San Sebastian across the Spanish border. If you plan on taking it slow and sneaking in a few beach sessions during your trip, a whole week is best.
This is of course a non-exhaustive list of things to do, see and eat while in the area based on our recent trip. Please do feel free to share any more recommendations or tips you may have, so we can build a more comprehensive guide together!
How to get there?
If you’re already in France, you can take the train to Biarritz or Saint-Jean-de-Luz (a 4.5h – 5h train ride from Paris). If you’re outside the country you can fly in to Biarritz (with a stopover in Paris) and take it from there. You can choose to stay in a rental or in a hotel in Biarritz, or rent a car to stay in a more affordable, but just as beautiful area like we did in Arcangues.
Practical tips
Before I start sharing our 3-day itinerary, here are some practical tips and a few musings, if you are planning to visit Basque Country. I am writing these in the car as we drive back to Brittany, so my impressions are as fresh as can be!
